Scurvy is a nasty disease with an easy solution- Eat yer fruits and vegatables! Specifically your citrus. Ah, but not so easy lost at sea with no land in sight. Basically it causes bruising (bleeding beneath the skin), loose teeth, weakness, sore joints, bloody gums, and lots of other pleasant stuff.

But wait there's more! There are also accounts of sailors in the later phases of Scurvy experiencing sensitivity to light and noise, and disproportionate emotional reactions to common events. One pirate captain wrote of members of his crew sobbing at the site of a sunset. Possible cause of cabin fever?

The RN fought scurvy with rations of lime and lemon juice. Thus earning them the nickname 'Limeys'.
